Alldressforms® - All Dress Forms Personal Stories including our resident photographer, Jack Walsh and our dog for the deaf, Dazzle
We just received our latest copy of the Canine Listener Spring 2008 newsletter. Our dog, Dazzle, as well as many other wonderful hearing service dogs, is in this publication. June 11, 2008
The Canine Listener is a quarterly newsletter published by Dogs for the Deaf, Inc. to provide information on Hearing Dogs, placements, dog training, and other news about happenings at Dogs for the Deaf. If you would like to receive the complete newsletter, write to: Dogs For The Deaf, 10175 Wheeler Road, Central Point, OR 97502 or e-mail:  newsletter@dogsforthedeaf.org

Dear DFD,

Dazzle is sending this big box of doggy treats for the dogs in training. We give our love to the entire staff and all who are involved with every aspect of the loving care you give to the dogs who need homes and to the  people who need them so very much! I could not have asked for a more amazing, loving, smart, and clever dog! We are perfect for each other. Stephanie and Dazzle, South Carolina.

Note: this is the photo they used but since DFD prints their newsletters in black and white, I'm using the color version of the picture they published of Dazzle.

Descriptions of some of the movies Dazzle is starring in on Youtube:

Christmas 2007 -
Our hearing dog, Dazzle, takes time off to rescue a teddy bear.

Dazzle uses the doggy steps to easily get up on a high place (such as a bed or the couch) after learning to use them in less than one minute! He still chooses to use his trademark "flying leap" to get back down. We've noticed that this is because the steps would have to be placed further away from the bed in order for him to leap down onto them.

Dazzle alerts us to the timer, which is an oven timer that can be placed anywhere and used to alert us after a specific time has passed. This is especially good if we have an appointment or are expecting visitors.

Dazzle alerts us to objects we drop such as keys, letters and anything else that may get dropped without our being aware of it.

Dazzle is shocked to see a snowstorm in South Carolina! Where are those dog toys? Buried in the snow, of course!

Story Number 3 - Dinner time written by Jack on Saturday, March 24, 2007

"Dazzle is provided with Diamond Lamb and Rice dry dog food. He'd rather formulate his menu from what little he can con from us when we eat.

He believes in tithing. He's very polite about it. If we are having dinner, Steph will "exile" him (he is fed before we are and is trained to stay away from the table while we are eating) to the living room, which is near our dining area. Dazzle will retreat and lie on the carpet and then metamorphose into a cocker spaniel to get his mournful sigh and look just right.

If I'm eating alone he will materialize out of the vapors to be next to me. I will generally offer him a small taste. He adopts his "Le Cordon Bleu" training to assess my offering. If it doesn't meet his criteria, he will turn his head and walk two or three steps back and turn to see if I had a better presentation. Generally, he likes whatever it is I'm eating, so I'll give him a couple of tastes. When I'm finished eating I will put up both hands, palms outward, signifying "no more". Since I don't trick him, he accepts this and walks away.

At times, he may stand and watch from the living room j-u-s-t  i-n  c-a-s-e."

Story Number 2 -  Written by Jack on Saturday, February 25, 2006 upon returning home from a dog-friendly shopping trip.

"Stephanie and I had some shopping to do, so we went to the Super Wal-Mart. Not wanting to walk the many football-field lengths of the place, I got an electric cart for myself. Myself and Dazzle, that is. I put a pad on the bottom of the basket and placed Dazzle in the cart and off we sped. Dazzle particularly likes these adventures. He sits intently taking in all the sites and smells as I swoop in and out of the aisles.

It is an interesting study in contrasts watching the reactions of the shoppers as they react to the sight of an escorted Benji dog and a bearded chauffeur pass by in a motorized cart. The significant fact is that most people will stare straight at you without a hint of recognition in their eyes, so involved are they in their own weary pursuits. Observant children, however, often passengers themselves, are different. Their eyes open with delight. "Look a dog!" as I swoop down another aisle before the adult shopping cart pusher has time to react.

I would say, even in a fairly crowded Saturday afternoon throng, only about 10% of the shoppers even noticed. Of those, most smiled. No puritanical frowns on this shopping trip. One blue apron-clad employee sought to inquire about the appropriateness of the canine companion, but was easily diverted by a question about the location of a particular item. I credit the imperious dignity of Dazzle's demeanor. We were there for about an hour and during that time only one lady, a comfortable looking woman in her forties broke through the reserve to actually talk with us. She politely asked if it was ok to approach Dazzle who secretly loves and actually expects this attention. We chatted for a while and then she thanked the both of us for the experience. I sense that there were others who would have equally enjoyed such an encounter, but like awkward strangers at a party, they shied away from what could have been a delightful experience."

Story Number 1: Valentine for Stephanie from Jack and Dazzle written by Jack Walsh on February 14, 2005.

"Dazzle was given to us by the organization, “
Dogs for the Deaf” two days before September 11th, 2001. So while the country entered a new era of fear, Stephanie and I entered a magical new relationship. hearing dog for the deaf and hard of hearing playing with one of his owners

Dazzle is a mixture of the best parts of a Shih Tzu and a Cairn terrier. In my mind that makes him an heir of the legendary Augustine terrier. The St. Augustine was bred on the opposite side of the Alps from the more popular St. Bernard of mountain rescue fame. Equally talented as a service dog, the St. Augustine first came to notice in 1303 AD assisting monks from the Augustine monastery in their highly decorative hand lettering called “illuminations”, which adorned the first letter of each chapter in the Bible. This exquisite and colorful lettering was in sharp contrast to the austere and drab lifestyle of the Augustinian monks themselves.

These lively terriers not only guarded the monastery, but were trained to fetch, collate and store these illustrated parchments in their proper order. One reason they are not so well known today dates back to the Scandal of 1314, which rocked the foundations of the Roman Catholic Church. Apparently, one night a pack of dogs shredded thirty pages of the newly illustrated manuscripts.

Pope Clement V who was in the midst of his controversy with the Knights Templar denounced “this wanton destruction” and, by doing so, opposed those monks who pled that the dogs were visited by Divine inspiration and were preserving the Holy Bible’s authenticity.

It wasn’t until December 13, 1545 that the Council of Trent judged that the Augustine terriers were divinely inspired and the overly masticated pages were forthwith referred to as “Apocrypha”. In an effort to bestow honor upon these divinely inspired canines, all undisputed articles of faith would forevermore be known as “dogma.”

As remarkable as these terriers were in their ability to collate, collect and store these priceless holy manuscripts, modernization finally caught up with them since they were never able to acclimate themselves to the Dewey Decimal System.

Dazzle is a courtly and loyal companion and yet maintains an unassailable streak of independence that it is generated by its own internal logic.

Should you call for him you may be ignored. Should you need him, he will be immediately by your side. Should you wish to feed him he will ignore his dinner. Should you wish to feed yourself he will lie besides you with a plaintive stare. Should you run an errand he will guard the door until your return. Should you seek him out he will be invisible. Should you try to pet him he will stand just out of your reach. Should you feel a touch of sadness, he will rest his head in the crook of your arm. Should you be distracted, he will perch on his haunches like an observant Prairie dog until acknowledged. Should there be a knock on the door he will enthusiastically butler the new arrival like a long lost cousin.

Dazzle has a passion for learning new tricks. His original trainer informed us that while he will willingly chase balls, he is too independent to play catch.

She was almost right. Not only will he bring the ball back to you but also, during the last two weeks, Dazzle has learned a new trick! When Stephanie accidentally drops something Dazzle will not only alert Stephanie to where she dropped the item, he will, with a little encouragement, return the dropped item to her hand.

Without being anthropomorphic about it, Dazzle appears to exhibit a wry sense of humor. Should I oversleep beyond the limits of his tolerance he will rouse me from my sleep and hasten my steps to the kitchen by brushing his whiskers against my lurching heels and insteps.

One time when Stephanie and I were resting in bed, Dazzle went into his Prairie dog routine. We both, in concert, sat up with our “paws” in front of us, imitating his stance. It was the first time I ever saw a dog do a double-take realizing that we were mocking him.

On this Valentine’s Day when our thoughts gravitate towards family and love, there can be no greater love than what we feel for our smallest family member, Dazzle il Magnifico."

Happy Valentines Day 2005 to Stephanie.

We Love you!
Jack and Dazzle

Bless you,
Dogs for the Deaf!
