Fulsome hair on a female was a feature of the late Victorian and early Edwardian period. Pads and frames of false hair helped the hairstyle of this era appear full and soft. The pompadour style continued in the early Edwardian years and was shaped over a transformation or tournure mesh frame. Frames including the Marie Stuart support frame, gave a heart shaped Elizabethan look to the hair once the frame was covered over with billows of hair. False frizzettes, false switches and plaits all helped achieve the look of the day.

Some of the c1900 styles shown here are reminiscent of 1830's Apollo Knots. At night hair had to be even higher, so plumes and ornaments all helped achieve the illusion of height. These pictures show advanced hair ornamentation using aigrettes, feathers and frame supports. This information has been supplied by the Fashion Era website.

These lovely fashion plates have been reproduced as fine art prints and are ideal for grouping as a wall arrangement for interiors. These Fashion Plates in full color are all print reproductions of the originals found in “La Coiffure Française Illustrée”.
